Best way to have day-trip from Paris to the French Alps?

One of the areas we would like to see are the Alps. How long does it take to get to the Alps by train? Would we have time to travel there, enjoy the scenery for an afternoon or so, and get back all in the same day? What city should we visit?

I’m off to Paris on the 9th of April for my birthday with 3 other friends. I’ve not been to Paris before, and would like to know roughly how much money would be sufficient to last me throughout the day? We haven’t decided on what it is we will be doing in Paris, so if you could also give us suggestions on what to do there? We’re definitely going to the Eiffel Tower!
